Don't look away: an eclipse, melting ice, and our climate blindness

For a few minutes, the sky goes dark, the temperature drops, the light feels strange. People stop whatever they’re doing and look up. There’s something extraordinary about an eclipse: it can make millions of us pay attention to the sky at the same time. We’re fascinated by the sun disappearing for a few minutes. And yet, somehow, we’re remarkably good at ignoring a much bigger transformation happening right in front of us.
I’m writing this from the ocean, close to Greenland, during an oceanographic research cruise. Out here, surrounded by cold waters and ice, we’re studying what happens when that ice melts, how those changes affect the ocean, and what they might ultimately mean for Earth’s climate. From here, climate change feels a lot less abstract.

If you’ve seen Don’t Look Up, you’ll probably remember the premise: scientists discover a comet heading straight towards Earth and desperately try to warn everyone. The threat is real. It’s measurable. It’s literally visible in the sky. And still, politicians calculate, the media turn it into entertainment, businesses look for opportunities, and everyone argues about whether they should believe what’s happening. It’s absurd. And it’s funny. Mostly because it feels painfully familiar.
Climate change doesn’t arrive as one giant comet that everyone can point to. Instead, it shows up in retreating glaciers, warming oceans, shrinking sea ice, rising temperatures, heatwaves, fires and floods. The evidence doesn’t arrive all at once with a dramatic countdown. It accumulates. And maybe that’s precisely the problem.
Greenland is one of those places where these changes become much harder to ignore. When its ice melts, the consequences don’t simply stay here. Yes, melting land ice contributes to sea-level rise. But the freshwater entering the ocean can also change its physical properties and circulation, with potential consequences for marine ecosystems and, ultimately, for us.
Scientists are still working to understand exactly how all those pieces fit together.
That’s a big part of why we’re out here: observing, measuring, collecting samples and trying to understand how changes happening in the Arctic can influence the ocean — and potentially the climate — far beyond this seemingly remote corner of the planet. The climate system has a way of reminding us that there really is no such thing as an isolated place. What happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic.
Perhaps one of our biggest problems isn’t that we don’t know what’s happening. It’s that we’re incredibly good at getting used to it: another temperature record, another glacier retreating, another extreme weather event, another headline… We notice, we scroll, and then everyday life carries on. Little by little, the extraordinary starts to feel ordinary.
That, to me, is what makes Don’t Look Up such an uncomfortable metaphor. It isn’t simply a story about people denying science. It’s about distraction. Short-term thinking, competing priorities, and our astonishing ability to look away from something simply because confronting it is difficult or inconvenient.
An eclipse is easier. We know exactly when the darkness will begin. We know when it will end. And we know that, a few minutes later, the sun will come back. Climate change doesn’t offer us that reassuring timetable.

During an eclipse, we’re told not to look directly at the sun without protection. That is, of course, excellent advice for our eyes. But perhaps it’s not such good advice for our collective imagination.
Out here, near Greenland, watching the ocean and studying the consequences of a changing cryosphere, it’s difficult not to think about just how connected everything is: ice, ocean, atmosphere, climate — and, ultimately, us.

The physics doesn’t care whether we’re paying attention. The ice doesn’t wait for us to finish debating before it melts. So perhaps the lesson of the eclipse isn’t only to look up. It’s to keep looking — and pay attention while there is still time to change what happens next.
