Javier Arístegui is a Full Professor of Ecology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), where he has supervised 22 PhD students and many Master’s students in Biological Oceanography at the Faculty of Marine Sciences, for nearly 40 years. He has been director of the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (2011–2012), the Marine Technological Service (2015–2018), and the Canaries Observatory of Harmful Algae (2018–2023) at the ULPGC. His research spans pelagic ecosystem dynamics, plankton ecophysiology, microbial oceanography, and biogeochemistry. In recent years, he has focused on climate-change impacts on plankton communities and nature-based carbon dioxide removal. He has published around 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, coordinated 38 national and international projects, co-authored more than 200 conference presentations and participated in about 40 oceanographic cruises across major ocean basins. He has contributed extensively to the scientific community as an organizer of international conferences, reviewer for 18 science foundations, and reviewer for over 40 journals. He currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Progress in Oceanography (since 2026) and Deep Sea Research II (since 2014) and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science (since 2015), and has been Guest Editor for several journals. He has been involved in major international programs, including the Eur-Oceans Network of Excellence (2005–2007) and the IMBER global change program, where he served as Vice-Chair (2007–2013). He contributed to key international reports, including the JGOFS time series and SOLAS-IMBER implementation plans, was a Contributing Author and Reviewer for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (2014), and a Lead Author for the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (2017–2019). He is currently an associate member of SCOR WG 155 (Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems) and Co-Chair of SCOR WG 161 (Mesopelagic Ocean Respiration). His recognitions include the 2015 Helmholtz International Fellow Award. Since 2021, he has served as Director of the UNESCO Chair on “Marine and Coastal Sustainability” at ULPGC.
