Biography

Joaquín Ortiz Cortes is a post doctoral researcher for the Biological Oceanography Group (GOB). After obtaining a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Bonn, and a Masters degree in Toxicology from the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin he completed his doctoral thesis at the Geomar Helmholtz-Center for Ocean Research in Kiel under the supervision of Prof. Ulf Riebesell and Prof. Javier Arístegui. His studies have mainly focused on the effects of artificial upwelling on natural phytoplankton communities and this technology’s potential for enhancing ecosystem services, such as food web productivity and carbon sequestration. More precisely, how it influences primary production, community structure and physiology. His practical experience stems from numerous large-scale mesocosm studies and research cruises, where he had the opportunity of simultaneously being a scientist, research diver and on-site technical assistant.

He is currently employed under the EU project OceanNETs, investigating the applicability of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), another negative emissions technology. Aside from this, he takes a strong interest in toxicological topics as well as animal & plant behavior and morphology.
